Cape Town culture

I’ve almost been here a week and I am having the best time just being with family and friends and not really planning anything at all – it has been so lovely.

I have found an art class I can go to on the next 2 Friday mornings which I am really excited about and have bought supplies for it today. I have loads of ideas for a series of pictures on the hurtful parts of humanity and they involve lots of drawings of people so I have been practicing. One idea for a picture is on the walls that we build up between religions or even between within the same religion; this is partly inspired by what I saw in Israel as I was able to visit some of the religious sites there. Another idea is on the despicable practice of sexual exploitation and trade which I have been hearing about from one of my friends who is working in Nepal to help see a stop to this. I saw a sign for “Sale – Final Clearance” and it brought back to my mind the image from a video my friend sent me on the brothels in India and the price that so many young girls pay for the childhood, their wholeness, their souls, and through no choice of their own.
I spent a day in Cape Town centre visiting some of the art galleries and doing some sketching and gathering inspiration.

On a less heavy note, I have really enjoyed hanging out with my family here and doing things like cooking for them, picking up the kids from school, seeing the boys play their waterpolo matches, going to the Aquarium with them, playing Wii sport with the kids (who of course beat me!).

This weekend has been really great with an amazing chance to see the semi-finals of the rugby live; I got to use one of their season tickets and the stadium is just round the corner. And what an awesome match! Western Province beat Cheetahs 31-7 and played really well and I am now feeling like I understand some more of the rules of rugby.

Sunday, I got to go to church with my friends and then for a picnic at Kirstenbosch gardens. The gardens are beautiful and the weather on Sunday was glorious (almost like summer). Then it was onto a braai at another friend’s house (what a house!!!) with the most beautifully cooked steak – soft, melty, and just the right balance between raw and lightly cooked....mmm mmm mmmm!

Another great thing about staying with family, apart from all the hospitality, laughter and generosity, is that I have been able to use their gym! :) I went today at 8:15am and spent the morning there, finishing at 2pm – I did pilates, running, cross trainer, rowing, weights, swam a mile, yoga – it was awesome! And now I feel like I have earned my dinner! The generosity thing is immense – I even borrowed their lovely Audi to go out shopping this afternoon!

It has been hard in a way to allow things to happen and not to plan too much of my time or jump from one thing to the next, but it is good to learn to do this especially so that I can keep an eye and ear out for how I might be able to bless the people I get to spend time with here.

I am still to do a lot of activities and am keeping a close eye on the surfing conditions at Muizenburg and hope to go this week!
