Hello from Thailand! And more specifically from Chiang Mai!
I arrived here on Friday evening after a long journey from Cape Town, but everything went very smoothly really, despite the delayed departure from Cape Town, so I am very thankful. It was odd being on Malaysian Airways on a flight that had come from Buenos Aires and so hearing all the annoucements in English, Malay (Bahasa) and Spanish - the only 3 languages I can understand really!
The hostel I am staying at is lovely and very welcoming and I have already met some lovely people.
Yesterday, on my first day in Chiang Mai, I went for coffee with a group of people who are in my hostel and then spent the afternoon with A who is in the same room as me wondering around downtown. I LOVE Chiang Mai - it is a lovely climate, feels very safe, and the Thai people here are so friendly - it is GREAT! Everything is very relaxed and of course the food is amazing and really cheap. I booked a few things yesterday too, and after spending about 3 hours having lunch/dinner early evening, I headed with A to the Saturday market. Lots of great things to see and buy, but I most enjoyed having a foot massage and watching the group of Thais around me having a good chat and giggle.
Today I have been to a cooking class. It was really enjoyable. We got to go to the food market outside of town and be told about some of the different ingredients used in Thai cooking and then we spent the rest of the day being shown how to make dishes, making them and then eating them. Needless to say I am absolutely stuffed after 6 dishes!!!
I think I will do 2 or 3 more days but not all consecutively because it is far too filling. There are set recipes for each day so going to choose ones that I like most and also each day has an event like the tour of the market, so there is one on making curry pastes and another on vegetable curving which look like fun.
Tomorrow I have an appointment for a massage/treatment with a guy who has been recommended to me who helps to correct posture and things and I am hoping after the pain, my back will be much more comfortable (it has been quite sore since boarding the plane in Cape Town). Also going to see about booking some trekking...
Will upload some photos soon and with over 300 temples I hope you will forgive me in advance for lots of photos of temples!
