It has been absolutely ages since I last wrote, so sorry for that! I had some more time back in the field sites, and various meetings both internal and external and it was a busy time up to Christmas break. But we did manage to produce the 550 cement latrine slabs that we needed to do before the river dried up so that was a great achievement!
I have to say that there is so much that I think could be so much better with my work and with the work that we are all doing and it is those things that are constantly frustrating and wear you down. After 14 weeks of being in Southern Sudan working I was absolutely spent and needed a good Christmas break! I did have a good Christmas break, although I wish I wasn't back already in Sudan as I think that an extra week would have helped me prepare more for coming back. I think it took me 2 weeks to get over the trauma of it all!!!!
But I had the best time in Cape Town! It was amazing! I was so excited about paved roads, proper driving regulations, proper buildings, shops, town planning, beautiful gardens and events going on, clean streets, lovely comfortable homes....I was a little bit overwhelmed on my first day!!! I stayed with some amazing relatives who were just so welcoming and so generous in so many ways and it was great to be with some family and enjoy playing with little children, giggling and not having to fend for myself.
We went on some lovely walks, up Table Mountain, Elephant's Eye, Newlands forest, around in Kirstenbosch, met cheetahs up close, went wine tasting, played, swam, played, went to the waterfront, shopping, kayaking, to various beaches, to see the penguins, crayfishing, lots of braais and lots of fun in the pool and I even managed to stand and surf on my last day on my first ever surf lesson! It was such a cool feeling! Of course, now I want to be back there and perfecting my skills!!! I ate so much yummy food, drank lots of great wine, laughed, chilled out and enjoyed being around great family and friends. Really really an amazing time!
I was gonna put some photos up here for you all, but I haven't got them on my at the moment, so maybe will try another day.
So I do feel like I have had a break, although I also am feeling tired having not really slept last night on my way through Entebbe and also quite upset that my bags didn't make the journey with me. I am told they will be here tomorrow, so here's hoping! Otherwise I am going to be a very very sad person going to the field sites with no toiletries, clothes and fun things to do. In fact, I will probably delay if I don't get my stuff tomorrow. That reminds me, I better go and phone the airport in Entebbe and see if they arrived from Jo'berg tonight. Must dash before they close!!!
